Tuesday's Ebay Selling Tip: Don't take advice from Yard Sale Mommy

The buyers out there in ebay world have really been raking me over the coals lately.

Which leads me to believe that maybe you shouldn't be taking my advice.  I've been dolling out refunds these days like I'm Santa and it is Christmas.

Here's a look at some of my recent ebay communications:

1.  Dear so and so, I regret to inform you that I shipped your item in a box that used to contain wine and it has been sent back to me, where it sat on my doorstep in the rain while I was on vacation for a week.  Who knew you couldn't ship using a box with alcoholic beverages on it?  Well,  I guess I did but I just forgot.

2.  Dear such and such, I regret to inform you that the dress I listed as a size 7 is really a size 4, yes I am a big dummy so here is your money back.

3.  Dear blah blah blah, I regret to inform you that I can't find your item.  I've looked all over my extremely organized garage full of junk (ha!) and it must have been stolen in the middle of the night by the toy thieves.  So sorry.

4.  Dear Miss You Are Totally Lying and I Know It, here is your money back because I just don't feel like arguing with you today.

5.  Dear Miss Brand New to Ebay,  Thank you so much for the negative feedback.  I knew it was coming and it's good to just have it over with.  And thanks, too, for not contacting me first to let me know you were displeased...that was so kind and courteous.  Most importantly, thank you for buying 5 of my items and leaving me bad feedback for ALL of them.  You know, 'cause if you're gonna go, go all out.

I'm sorry, I must go now.  All of a sudden I am dripping with sarcasm and I need a towel.  But at least I feel a little bit better.

  1. Sorry to hear that. I've definitely had a stretch of bad buyers. I can remember my R2-D2 star wars auction almost 3 years ago when I got my first negative feedback. Offered and gave full refund, buyer kept item, all over $5 and the buyer had over 300 feedback. My blocked list has grown over the years for sure.

  2. I shipped a pair of new Men's Dress Shoes to Germany in the beginning of September almost 6 weeks ago. I sent via First Class and didn't insure the package (my big mistake) and guess what he hasn't received the shoes yet and now I'm refunding $122 plus shipping! Yeah!

  3. I cashed in a little on the recent Missoni craze. Didn't do too badly. Took a hit on some of the shipping though because I had calculated wrong when setting the shipping prices. Live and learn.

    My recent eBay communication-

    Here's my item title -
MISSONI for Target zig zag ballet flat Women's size 8 (girl's size 6) IN HAND

Here's the winning bidder's request hours before the auction end-
"I need to retract my bid. I was confused by the way these shoes were advertised. I need a women's size 6 and I thought that was what I was bidding on. It even came up as a women's 6 when I typed in the search box that I wanted shoes in size 6.
Please retract my bid. I'm really sorry about the misunderstanding."

Did she not read the title that clearly said Women's size 8? Oh well. At least she was nice about it and didn't wait until she won/received them to complain.

  4. I got my first bad feedback just last month and I practically melted. I offered her everything possible including full refund and shipping but she was just bent on giving me a negative. Now everytime I see I have a message I squirm just a bit.

  5. It will be okay Jen! Sometimes I still squirm at my messages, because I'm wondering, "What is it now!!!???"

I had another ebay account before the one I have now, and let's just say it wasn't very good. :(

I've had people call me a liar to my face, but in fact I gave an exact description of the item.

Some people just can't read I guess.

I will still take your advice, because your advice has helped me and countless others! :)

  6. I'm sorry to hear about these incidents with your buyers. That really stinks! I have to thank you for saving me from a huge headache though. I am desperate for boxes and was going to get some from a family member who works for a liquor distributor. I'm new at this so I didn't know you can't send boxes with alcoholic beverages on it!

  7. At our post office, there's a picture of a box with a label on it that says "Vodka" and then it shows that you should scribble it out. I'm a big scribbler. I cross out anything on the outside of the box.

I got a message from a buyer of a Gevalia coffeemaker in August who basically accused me of having a big broken coffeemaker conspiracy where I sell stuff that I say I haven't tested, but I in fact have tested it and I know it's not working, but I sell it anyway. When I asked her why I would want to do that and risk the negative feedback, she had no answer. I refunded her money and told her to just keep the stupid thing.

I always get nervous when I see I have a message. You just never know what it's going to be.

  8. Oh boy - you poor thing!

A newbie messaged me saying she wanted a refund because the shipping did not cost me as much as the listing was for - I didn't have the heart to tell her that placing a bid knowing the shipping price is a contract.

  10. Sorry for the string of bad eBay luck Jen. Ashley - You should have told her that the charge is for shipping AND handling. Gas, packaging supplies, ink... aren't free! Geesh.

  11. I am so sorry about all the bad things going on with ebay and I will totally be listening to you because there isn't anyone else out there teaching us about using ebay! And I too am very excited you are back!!!

  12. My tummy always does a little flip when I see I have a message. Guess now you just have more great advice to give us. :)

  13. Sorry you've had a run of bad luck! I keep getting messages like "I really like your item." (uhhhh....okay? Are you buying it then?) or "I really want to buy such and such but I don't have the money for it right now" - (so why do I need to know this?) there are some weird people out there for sure

  14. I have been giving refunds for shipping lately--so I don't have to do this then? I've started printing my labels through paypal just so the shipping cost doesn't show on the package, LOL.

  15. Each time I have a msg I tense up and squirm. It feels pretty personal when someone is unhappy.

This post was great. Gives a feeling of comradship and good to the see the pretty and the ugly :-)

  16. Bummer summer! If it makes you feel any better, I was SUPER excited when I saw I had a new post from you in my inbox. :)

  17. You are so funny! I used to take negatives so personally, but now I know that it is part of the business. You really can't please everyone. There are some people out there who won't be happy no matter what you do!

  18. Nice to see you back!

Newbies are the worst. They have no idea how the system works and don't often care. They're like little annoying saboteurs that can drag down your rating. As a seller, you can't strike back with retaliatory negative feedback to warn other sellers. The worst part about it is eBay doesn't really care.

  19. I just had a very annoying experience with a buyer. She was outbidding people like crazy on a certain item, and as soon as the item ends she sends me a message saying "I'm sorry, I will not be paying for this item. Thank you". When I asked her to explain, she said she was "bidding for a friend and she changed her mind. Sorry" Ummmm WTF?! Are you telling me I missed a sale AND paid outrageous fees just for you to change your mind?! I just don't understand some people....

  22. I had a really bad experience with a customer, who lied in order to get her money back...and now, I really don't think I want to try EB again. I've had much better luck with Amazon personally.

  23. I just got my first negative feedback last month.:( New ebay user that doesn't have any feedback, and doesn't care about putting mine down. Never complained to me, never said anything was wrong with the purchase. Gave him all off his money back and apologized. Still nothing. To top it off the item was $3.26 and that included shipping! Ha!:)

  24. I have SO had to tell people I can't find their item. Oh jeeze, that one made me laugh!
