Tuesday's Ebay Selling Tips: When to List Your items

Maybe by now, dear readers, you've picked something you want to sell.  You've made sure it fits one of the categories:
  • Very expensive to purchase retail
  • Very popular, but no longer made/sold in stores anymore
  • You've got a huge lot of it, very valuable in terms of the amount of money that is invested in what you have
You've thought about whether seasonally it's appropriate to sell it, and you've done your research.

You've looked at my What to Sell Wednesday posts and gotten some ideas.

People often ask me, when is the best time to list my item?  And for how long should I keep the auction going?

I've found that the best time to list an item you want to sell is at night, on a weeknight.  Monday-Thursday is ideal, but I especially like Thursdays.  If you end your listing on a Thursday, you'll have the whole weekend to prepare your items for shipment and be ready for the postman on Monday.  Plus, shoppers feel more relaxed on Thursday nights, since Friday is right around the corner and people are already feeling more relaxed and able to spend their free time browsing.

However, there are a couple of things you should keep in mind.  First, is there a holiday weekend following the Thursday your auction is ending?  If so, choose another day.  Secondly, is there an extremely popular TV show on when your listing is ending?  If so, choose a time during that evening when the show is not playing.  I often choose 10pm, since by then most good shows have ended on the East Coast and have yet to begin on the West.  Studies show this makes a difference.

(Some of you may remember a post, which has been lost in cyberspace, about my auctions ending during the American Idol finale.  NOT a good idea!)

As far as auction length is concerned, 7 days is best for most times of the year.  However, if you are selling at Christmas or before a big holiday or have time sensitive material, shortening it to one or three day will get the job done.

In addition to my shrunken head (eww), I'm excited about this big ol' guy this week:

The girls have been having a good time with Spike!!

As well as the Lego Castle of Morcia, which I paid $2 for...

Here's a recent ended auction for the dinosaur, and here's one for the castle.   Are you going to sell anything this week?  Are you inspired yet?
