Auctions are Closed...What were my top sellers? Notes from the once-a-month ebay mommy...

Charlotte decided to try "coloring" this week.  She found two random crayons on the floor and her sister's math test (I'm some housekeeper, huh?), toddled over to an open space on the floor, flopped down on her belly and decided to give it a try.  I was impressed!
The auctions are over, the night is done, and now the shipping begins.  It was a good showing, especially for June which is typically a very slow month for toys!

The Highs:
Little Einsteins Rocket Ship:  $50 (paid $2)
Mickey Mouse Clubhouse:  $86 (paid $5)
Dora Dollhouse furniture:  $46 (paid $10, but I still have the dollhouse to sell at a consignment sale since I didn't feel like shipping it)
Spike the dinosaur:  $80 (paid $40)
Peter Rabbit Book set, hardback, vol. 1-23:  $40 (paid $3)
Barbie 12 dancing princesses, and the carriage:  $86 total (paid $15, but I still have the castle to sell too!)

The Lows:
My Vintage Sewing Patterns:  $9.99.  I guess I didn't have good ones!  I expected to get more.
Brand new Dora Sheet set:  Didn't sell.  Dora must be yesterday's news.
Lego Castle Set:  $32.00.  I only paid $3, so I shouldn't be complaining, but if I had the instructions and could have gotten it put together I would have made $50 more!

The Surprises:
Heroscape Game and Pieces, incomplete:  Sold for $56
Shrunken Head Kit  Sold for $33 (paid $1)

Well, those are the things worth chatting about.  I'm so thankful to God for anything that I make, as it is in His hands, not mine!

I'm so enjoying your questions, emails, and comments.  It's keeping me busy, busy, busy.  I have a question for you...and you can answer honestly...I'm thinking about monetizing this site (whatever that means!) but would hate for you to think that I've "sold out"!  Would that make me totally cheesy?  I love the idea of helping YOU make some extra money.  Would it be wrong for me to throw an ad or two up as a way to be reimbursed for my time?  What are your thoughts?

And should I make a facebook page?  Even though I know zip about facebook other than I've seen the movie?  I'm so old school...

  1. I really love your blog. I just started doing ebaying this year and my sales are not like yours :( So jealous...

  2. Keep at it, you'll get there! It's all about buying the right stuff!

  3. You should make a facebook page. I wrote a blog about making a fan page for your ebay store but I know you don't have a store. Great sales. I usually do BIN instead of auctions. I had too many low sales with auctions. I have been thinking about the ad thing too. My thought is It is your blog and you should be able to do what you want with it. no one will think you sold out. You have great tips and I love reading your blogs. A few ads would not keep me away.

  4. Honestly I don't view it as "selling out," if you monetize the blog. You spend time putting together thoughtful posts which attracts readers. The ads would just be a way to compensate you for your time.

I've had some success selling new children items on ebay (shoes and toys). Your blog has opened up my eyes to the ebay world of used collectibles/toys. Thanks for the wonderful ideas!

  5. Your blog is so helpful! Go ahead and have ads. thanks for your hard work

  6. Ads are awesome! Ok not really but I could give a flip :-O

  7. Ads, shm-ads...do what you want! We'll still come back :)

  8. I agree with the other posters - if you can make a buck (or thousand), we'll still read it. From a designer's point of view, you're blog is very clean, inviting and easy on the eyes. Ads can bring unpredictability to the design since you won't know what colors/designs they will be using, but the blog is yours; I'll still read even if it isn't sooo very perty :)

  9. Bring on the ads. It won't deter my interests and it sounds like your readership would continue. The time and effort you put worth is worthwhile of compensation. Keep up the great posts. Thank you!

  10. Please monetize. PV.31 showcases a woman who invests and profits! I hardly think that makes her a sellout. Besides, did you know that "home" and "economy" are from the very same root word in ancient Greek? Which in my humble opinion means that the two should go hand-in-hand. I'm passionate about profiting from our labor, and I don't think you should hesitate at all!

  11. does that say eight thousand dolllars?! holy moly!

  12. Annie, I'm pretty sure those are two exclamation marks. But an $81 profit is still really impressive.

  13. Yes, they were exclamation points. I just took them away so they won't be confusing. Someone told me this font is hard to read. Is this true? I might change it.

  14. Go right ahead and monetize. I love your blog, and you have already been such a blessing! It takes time to blog and by doing so you help us out...so why shouldn't we return the favor:) Love your posts. Keep them coming!

  15. Does ebay have an affiliate program? If so, you should totally join and have a box on your website to enter and buy on ebay through you! You mention them so much they should be paying YOU for some of that free advertisement! Love your blog!
As for your font, sometimes the numbers are hard to make out but other than that I like the font!

PS Get rid of word verification...it can be annoying!

  16. Hi Jen - I think you should monetize! You're sharing valuable information... literally! So go for it. I really really really want a smart phone but I just can't justify the additional monthly cost of service right now. :( Any suggestions? Also, today I picked up a box of Sweet Streets... it has 5 buildings and then parts, nothing complete. I'm not sure what is the best way to sell it all? In separate lots, piece by piece, or one big giant lot? What would you do?

  17. I will add that a lot of giveaways and sponsor posts do turn me away from blogs so I would suggest you keep those to a minimum! :)

  18. The font isn't so hard to read except for the numbers and exclamation.

And FYI for next time- you can usually look up the lego directions online, even for ones that are expired. (From a mom with boys who are constantly losing their directions.=)

  19. I so love love love your blog! There is nothing like a good deal that makes this mom so happy as well!! I love seeing all your good finds and it encourages me to try the same thing! And I say bring on the ads for sure! Why not make something if you can! Thanks for all your helpful tips and sure enjoy reading!!

  20. I love your site and wouldn't think twice if you had ads on it. You spend a lot of time educating the rest of us, so go ahead and monetize.

  21. PUT ads on!!! Seriously! It only makes sense, you need motivation to keep working hard at this great blog!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Okay I am convinced! Thanks for being so cool about it. Now I just have to figure out what to do! After I ship my packages...

  23. Hi Jen!

I was wondering if you had a reason for choosing to list for a Wednesday ending? I've read a few different reasons for ending on different nights/times and I'd love to hear why you chose Wednesday night.

    Thanks in advance :)

  24. I love your site. I've Ebayed on and off for years and your posts have given me the itch to go yard saling again. I vote to monetize the site and get a Facebook page. My Facebook page drives a good deal of traffic to my site. I also enjoy reading my favorite blogs posts on Facebook via my smart phone when I have an extra second through out the day.

  25. I've been "monetized" for about a year now. My son, who is a big website guru, warned me that Google Ad Sense program is very, shall we say parsimonious. Boy was he right! It seems it really takes a humongous amount of traffic to make any kind of serious cash stream from it. Since I don't, it's more on there for my amusement. But maybe you'll have better luck with your website.

Also, excellent blog and I like the layout and text, makes it fun to read...great job! Dude@Moneyinthegarage

  26. I would totally put ads on here, it's a lot of work to blog and you should get some kickback. I don't view it as "selling out", i just view it as making the most of your time :). Thanks for this review, it's encouraging.

  27. I think putting ads on your blog is a great idea for you. Why not make money. You spend a lot of time putting these together. I love your blog. I have only been following you for about a week and I think it is a GOD SEND for me right now. And yes make a facebook page that way those of us that love your blog can help you get more followers.
I was wondering about your post about the lego sale. You said you could have sold it for more if you had gotten it put together? Do you ship it together or apart? I know that everytime I touch my sons legos something seems to fall off so I was just wondering. Thanks :)

  28. Carrie--Listing on Wednesday was just pure necessity last week. I had to get the auctions ended and shipped before leaving on vacation! I like to list on Thursday evenings.

Melissa--Legos sell better if you have a complete set, or if you know you have almost a complete set or not. Without instructions and trying to put it together, I don't even know if I have pieces to go with the set pictured on the box!! A blogging friend indicated though in the comments that you can download the instructions...I will definitely be doing that next time!

  29. Great blog. I'm a SAHM ebay junkie. Just found you today and I'm following you now.

  30. Honestly, I have fully expected you to monetize the site from the beginning (or okay, from the beginning of my readership!). You have great blog entries accompanied by beautiful photos. So yes, definitely make whatever $$ you can!

About the font...the exclamation points that don't really look like exclamation points make it difficult to read. So yes, I vote for a font change!

A Facebook page may be nice, but it will really hurt your comments on the actual website, from what I've read on other blogs. Just a heads up.

Question: You purchased the dinosaur for $40, and sold it for $80. Great profit, but I'm imagining that it was difficult for you to shell out the $40. Most things you sell only cost a buck or two! So, how do you determine how much you're going to invest in a product to resell? Besides researching completed ebay auction listings, of course. Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  31. Jill--
That is an awesome question. What's funny is I really did struggle, as you said, to shell out that $40. But I looked it up on my phone and knew I could sell it for $80, and I am happy making $40 on one item. HOWEVER~this yard sale was near the end of my morning and I had money to spare. If it were early on, the decision would have been that much harder.

I leave the house with roughly $100 and when the money is gone, I go home. I HOPE to spend all of that money--that's a GREAT morning. I think today I spent $40?

  32. I am loving reading your blog posts; I may raid my grown children's closets! I just found you through www.moneysavingmom.com who, by the way, does post ads on her blog. She also lets people know if she talks about a post that she will get something from, which in my humble opinion is totally cool. You ladies spend hours on your blogs and we get to benefit, seems that ads that you vet for us would be a win-win.

    ReplyDelete
  33. If we are interested in purchasing the toys you find at these yard sales, do we need to check you out on ebay? Do you have an ebay store? I am a recent reader. Sorry if this has been covered already.

  34. Hello again Jen!
I say go Ad crazy! It's your blog (which is excellent by the way) and ads aren't going to change that.

I even think you should post links to your listings if you don't already (but I don't think I've seen them if you do) so you can profit that way too, I think those who want something you've got will be happy to have an easy way to find you on ebay!

Also, you mentioned that you leave the house with $100 each Saturday and when it's gone it's gone. Would you mind sharing your system for tracking your cash income and outgo? thanks :)

  35. Girl, you deserve to make a profit off advertisements. I started running ads on my blog My Dear Trash about a year ago. It's worth it. I don't make much, but I'm saving my earnings to put towards a My Dear Trash book I'm working on. Anyway, keep up the great work. I love it all!
